MIL-DTL-16356E
3.13.2 Frame. The frame of the gauges shall have ¾ inch outside diameter tubular connecting pieces. The
connecting pieces or tube assembly shall be inserted into the top and bottom valve connections through union
fittings. The gauge shall be removed from the valves without removal of the fittings from the boiler. Commercial
standard threaded union fittings shall be permitted.
3.13.3 Clamping device. The frame shall be clamped to the cover by U-bolts, the U-bolts extending through
the cover and retained by nuts. Means shall be included in the frame or cover to retain the U-bolts in position when
the cover is removed. Type A hardware requirements of 3.6 shall apply.
3.13.4 Valves. Type B gauge valves shall be constructed for 300 psig. The quantity, type, and size of drain
valves shall be as specified (see 6.2).
3.13.5 Mounting flanges. Flange pressure rating for Type B shall be 300 psig.
3.13.6 Shock. Gauges shall be in accordance with the Type C shock requirement of MIL-S-901 (see 4.4.1.1).
When specified (see 6.2), shock testing is required.
3.13.7 Vibration. Gauges shall be in accordance with the Type I vibration requirements of MIL-STD-167-1
3.13.8 Materials. Materials for Type B gauges shall be as follows:
a.
Frames, covers, tube assemblies, and fittings:
(1) Ductile iron in accordance with grade 60-45-10 of ASTM A536.
(2) Forged steel in accordance with ASTM A105/A105M.
(3) Cast steel in accordance with Grade WCB of ASTM A216/A216M or ASTM A352/A352M.
(4) Steel pipe in accordance with ASTM A106/A106M.
b.
Tubular connecting pieces:
(1) Brass.
(2) Corrosion-resisting in accordance with ASTM A276.
(3) Nickel-copper-alloy in accordance with ASTM B163 or ASTM B165.
(4) Steel pipe in accordance with ASTM A106/A106M.
c.
Valve sprocket wheel shall be made of ductile iron, cast steel, or forged steel.
d.
Quantity, type, and size of drain valves shall be as specified (see 6.2).
3.14 Type C. Intended for non-steam tank level applications or 150 psig or less steam applications where the
visible range of a single chamber design is acceptable. Continuous solid bar chambers with multiple vision slots
shall not be provided for boiler applications. Gauges shall use continuous vision, plain, double flat glass, as used in
Type A or reflex glass as used in Type B. Included in Type C are welding pad gauges that are designed to become
an integral part of a pressure vessel of tank.
3.14.1 Configuration. Type C gauges of the welding pad type shall be furnished with Type B reflex glass or a
single transparent pane when installation is made on both sides of the tank to permit see-through visibility. Type C
gauges of one piece chamber designs can be supplied with either reflex or double transparent glass as required for
the design.
3.14.2 Frame. The connecting pieces or tube assembly shall be inserted into the top and bottom valve
connections through union fittings. Tapered pipe threads (NPT) shall not be used anywhere on the gauge or valve
connections. Gauge shall be removable from the valves without removal of the fittings from the tank or boiler. Bar
stock pad of welding pad gauges shall be of the same base metal as the tank or pressure vessel to which it is to be
welded in accordance with grouping of S9074-AR-GIB-010/278. When specified (see 6.2), an insert bar is to be
provided.
