MIL-DTL-16356E
4.7.7.10 Mica quality test. Visual quality tests in accordance with ASTM D351 shall be applied to each lot,
checking carefully for flaws and surface defects. Air bubbles (inclusions) and waviness rather than stains
(discoloration) shall determine mica quality, unless the stains are too dark for clear visibility in the usable (vision)
area of the mica shield. Samples shall be measured for compliance with minimum thickness standards of 3.12.4.2 or
3.12.4.3. Samples shall be checked for compliance with the film, visible scratch, edge fracture, and manufacturing
standards specified in 3.12.4.4.
4.7.7.11 Tests for quality of sheet gasket material for classes I and II. No additional tests are required for
MIL-DTL-24696 gasket and spacer material.
4.7.8 Type B and C glass sets. Conformance inspection shall be performed on the sample selected as specified
4.7.8.1 Lot and sampling. For the purpose of sampling, a lot shall consist of all glass sets of one size and type
produced in one plant under essentially the same conditions and offered for delivery at one time. A lot shall not
exceed 1000 sets. A random sample of glass sets (glass and gaskets) shall be selected in accordance with
ASQ H1331 at Inspection Level S-2. When specified (see 6.2), AQL of 2.5 may be used for Class B and C glass
sets.
4.7.8.2 Examination. Each sample selected as specified in 4.7.8.1 shall be examined for compliance with the
requirements of this specification. This inspection shall encompass all visual examinations and dimensional
measurements.
4.7.8.3 Tests. Each sample selected in accordance with 4.7.8.1 shall be tested to determine conformance to the
requirements of this specification. Tests shall be conducted as specified in 4.7.8.3.1 and 4.7.8.3.2.
4.7.8.3.1 Corrosion test. The corrosion test shall be performed as follows:
a.
Glass shall be carefully placed in gauges with proper gaskets in the front and back of the glass.
b. Dry saturated steam shall then be allowed to pass through the gauge for a period of 48 hours at a pressure
of 275 psig.
c.
Glass shall show no surface disintegration.
4.7.8.3.2 Spall test. Glasses shall not spall or crack when dropped flatwise into cold water at 48±5 °F after
heating for 15 minutes at 350±5 °F.
4.8 Toxicity. A Health Hazard Assessment shall be conducted to ensure conformance to 3.19, as specified
(see 6.2). The Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMCPHC) will evaluate the material using the
administrative Health Hazard Assessment (HHA) data provided by the manufacturer/distributor to the NMCPHC.
5. PACKAGING
5.1 Packaging. For acquisition purposes, the packaging requirements shall be as specified in the contract or
order (see 6.2). When packaging of materiel is to be performed by DoD or in-house contractor personnel, these
personnel need to contact the responsible packaging activity to ascertain packaging requirements. Packaging
requirements are maintained by the Inventory Control Point s packaging activities within the Military Service or
Defense Agency, or within the military service s system commands. Packaging data retrieval is available from the
managing Military Department s or Defense Agency s automated packaging files, CD-ROM products, or by
contacting the responsible packaging activity.
